Glad you asked! ARES is the Amateur Radio Emergency Service.
The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.
Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization, is eligible for membership in ARES. The only qualification, other than possession of an Amateur Radio license, is a sincere desire to serve. Because ARES is an amateur service, only amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership.

Check into the Monday night net so we get to know you. Contact your local EC and participate in a local simplex net. If your town doesn’t have an EC, consider volunteering. Build a “go box” and keep it ready Participate in the next drill or recon rally Get your NIMS IS-100, 200 and 700 certification Take the ARECC Emcomm courses Download the Region 3 handbook or pick up a copy at the next regional meeting Set up and test antennas to make sure you can reach the repeaters in the handbook Set up a NVIS antenna and participate in HF tests Set up digital communications, pass some NTS traffic If your local town Emergency Manager has ham radio equipment and antennas at a town facility, offer to use the equipment regularly for amateur radio nets and contests. It’s a win-win – you get to practice, the EM gets an operator familiar with his equipment and you’ll both know that the equipment is in working order. Come to the quarterly meetings, participate in the rallies and public service events Check the regional web site, ctarea3.net often Keep your contact information up to date with the EC you report to
